Fostering in Rotherham and Elsewhere Today

If you have not kept up with the news then one you have missed is the taking out of children from a fostering environment in Rotherham and the reason given was that these people had voted for UKIP and that that was detrimental to the children they were fostering at the time. Naturally the facts have not been fully given, spin is all that seems to be endemic in this day and age so it is difficult for real comments and analysis to be undertaken without some form of if statements.

We are aware that these children had been taken out of their parents and placed with this couple in emergency. This is common as sometimes the time from finding out about children at risk and action being undertaken is short. It must be considered that although the aftermath may not be particularly pleasant, the health and safety and general wellbeing of children take priority so it is a better to be safe than sorry measure that social workers are required to take. There have been too many Baby P etc. and as long as the message of these cases are not loss then the actions follow the means. Then the act of taking children away from parents is dependent upon legal redress and the presence of the police as this is necessary. The children are scared and possibly have been previously because the nature of the family is usually detrimental with lack of care, cleanliness etc. prompting possible feeding problems for babies and young children. Therefore the need to find foster parents that can take such children is necessary and having these that live not too far away from the family home is also needed so that they have some form of parenting.

I assume that this is the case here. Then the UKIP problem is therefore related to the need to follow the ethic, religious and cultural needs of the child and that this takes priority. Given that over time, there is a requirement to enable contact with family on what is usually a very frequent basis and that foster parents to blood family differences could become difficult in the relationship The BBC website has posted the following which comes from the UKIP website regarding that political party's beliefs and therefore if a person is voting for that party what interpretation can be made of it.

UKIP immigration policy
An immediate five-year freeze on immigration for permanent settlement.
After the five year freeze, a strictly controlled, points-based system similar to Australia to be introduced.
An aspiration to ensure that future immigration does not exceed 50,000 people a year.
Regain control of UK borders by leaving the EU.
Repeal the 1998 Human Rights Act and withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights.
Ensure British benefits are only available to UK citizens or those who have lived here for at least five years.
End the active promotion of the doctrine of multiculturalism by local and national government

Therefore, the so called indefensible is in fact defensible. The child needs to live in a positive environment whether by fostering or adoption and therefore, the authorities took a reasonable step to move the children on. The only thing about this is the disruption to the children and the amount of moves made on children in a fostering environment can be of several short term placements before a long term and more permanent arrangement is found. So therefore politicians like Michael Gove, the current Education Secretary need to take a hard look at themselves before saying things because they have huge publicity egos. However, we will probably not know the full facts and in many cases that would be wise because the children need protection.

This scenario applies all over the UK. The fact that this UKIP item happened in Rotherham is just that. It is unfortunate that the needs of children are not put first and therefore in this case, should this have been reported at all, and potentially put such children at greater risk and also now whether these foster parents can truly undertake the role given the publicity of this case and therefore have they effectively lost the standards they need to apply, given the financial rewards, and they are significant from undertaking this task. Furthermore, the training they have received is therefore being potentially lost, and that does not come cheaply.
